Presence in the GEO-X Plenary & GEO Week 2014

Members of GeoViQua have attended the Tenth Plenary Session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO-X) and the GEO Week Side Events in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting has served as the frame for the final activities of the project and has allowed for the dissemination of the final results and achievements.

GeoViQua has been present in the Side Events through the open meeting held on Monday 13th, from 12.30h to 14.30h, Architecture Implementation Pilot Phase 6 Results Presentation (Geneva International Conference Centre CICG -Room 5+6 Level 3). In this meeting, Joan Masó has presented the GEO label integration.

Also within the Side Events of the Plenary, the open meeting Quality models and tools for the GCI. GeoViQua tutorial has been held on Tuesday 14th, from 9h to 11h in the Room 15 (level -1). This side event was a live tutorial about the contributions of the GeoViQua developments: a new interface for providing user feedback about the data used and expert reviews; metadata comparison systems; new ways to express, code and see the quality of the data; new ways to find relevant information from information on data quality.

The results of the project has been exposed in the programme of talks at the speaker's corner of the European Stand. Within the session III, Joan Masó has talked about GeoViQua: Quality information easy and accessible for GEOSS producers and users, from 13.15h to 13.30h on Tuesday 14th, and he has also acted as a moderator in the session XI.

The Commission also wanted GeoViQua to held its internal PTB (Project Technical Board) meeting, the activity that has closed the project, in the same International Conference Centre.

GeoViQua also reserved an exhibition booth (Booth G) to present, throughout the week, the main project achievements. Exhibit has highlighted the activities of the GEO task ID-03: Engaging the Science and Technology (S&T) Community in GEOSS Implementation. Particular emphasis was on the GEO Label and the GEOSS Portfolio for Science and Technology. Additionally, GeoViQua FP7 activities related to ID-03 were publicized with an emphasis on the quality components for the GCI.

 

INSPIRE Workshop

GeoViQua participated in the INSPIRE Conference 2013 organizing a “Quality Information Workshop: from dataset quality to individual sample”.

Information about data quality is regularly created by official producers of geospatial data and by scientists who process and derive new datasets. Unfortunately this information takes a number of different forms (e.g., quality reports, scientific papers, informal comments..) whose formats are inhomogeneous, making comparison difficult. Current or extended standards for data quality descriptions (ISO19115, ISO19157, etc) can be used or developed to define ‘quality indicators’, including quality measures and provenance parameters but these become too verbose to represent sample-level quality.

More tools are needed. From the producer side, there is a need to simplify the creation of quality descriptions without compromising detail. From the user side, the identification of datasets that fit the user’s purpose can be achieved by allowing metadata inter-comparison, quality labels, data discovery using quality thresholds, refinement of search results and common visualization techniques. Additionally, user experiences need to be collected in a structured way so that comments, citations, discovered issues and ratings are captured, aggregated and exposed. This workshop discussed a INSPIRE perspective in the data quality by analyzing the outcomes of the GeoViQua FP7 project which aims to add rigorous data quality representations to existing search and visualization in the GEO Portal functionalities of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS):

1. A quality framework that enhances producer metadata, and proposes the addition of user feedback. The producer model builds on existing ISO standards (19115 and 19157) adding reference dataset information, citations, traceability of quality statements and discovered issues. The user model informs the database structure for a feedback server from which comments, citations, discovered issues, ratings and reports of usage may be stored and retrieved.

2. A quality-aware discovery service, namely a quality-aware extension of the OGC Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW-Q), which could cope with quality-constrained search. This will be included in the GEOSS Discovery and Access Broker.

3. A standards-based approach for the visualization of quality / uncertainty information in 2D, developed using the OGC Web Map Service (WMS). This extension reusing the concepts of UncertML in a ncWMS server implementation.

VII GEO European Projects Workshop

More than 175 experts in Earth observation around the world gathered at the VII Geo European Projects Workshop, organized by the European Commission and CREAF and held on 15 and 16 April in Barcelona.

 

Spatial Data Quality Workshop. GeoViQua project (public)

Workshop organized on 09/04/2013 in the EGU2013 Assembly (Vienna, Austria). The open workshop reviewed and presented these developments:

  • The GeoViQua quality framework that enhances producer metadata, and proposes the addition of user feedback. The producer model builds on existing ISO standards (19115 and 19157) adding reference dataset information, citations, traceability of quality statements and discovered issues. The user model informs the database structure for a feedback server from which comments, citations, discovered issues, ratings and reports of usage may be stored and retrieved.

  • A GEO label as a graphical representation of a dataset in the GEOSS (or other data portals and clearinghouses) based on the quality information that is available for it.
  • A user feedback catalogue where users can introduce comments, citations, discovered issues, ratings and reports of usage. This information can then be retrieved by the Discovery and Access Broker.
  • Some enhancements in metadata presentation such as, metadata size by side comparison, rubric metadata completeness assessment, provenance visualization, etc.
